Shawa is Green Safaris’ intimate, eco-minded camp in the game-rich Nsefu sector of South Luangwa, set right on the Luangwa River where wildlife traffic is constant and the soundtrack is pure riverine Africa. Just five under-canvas suites sit raised on stilts, opening wide to the floodplain with a “modern under canvas” feel that stays true to South Luangwa’s classic bush-camp spirit. What makes Shawa distinct is how it pairs this raw, wild setting with Green Safaris’ lighter-footprint approach, including silent electric game-drive vehicles, so you hear more of the bush and less of the engine.

Activities
Game drives (including silent electric drives) ~ walking safaris (seasonal/age-dependent) ~ night-drive returns after dark; boating is seasonal and water-level dependent in the Luangwa system

Our Favorite Rooms

Request one of the river-facing couples tents positioned for the widest Luangwa views and the strongest sense of immersion, where the canvas opens to the floodplain and you feel the movement of the river corridor all day. If you are travelling with family, ask for the interconnecting family setup so the space reads like a private two-tent suite while keeping the same under-canvas atmosphere and easy access to the main areas.

Dining

A relaxed, camp-style dining rhythm with meals served in the main area or outdoors when weather allows, typically built around fresh, seasonal produce and classic safari comfort. Expect flexible bush-meal moments around game activities rather than formal restaurant structure.

Tips

Packing Tips

Bring neutral layers for walking, proper closed shoes for foot safaris, a warm fleece for cool mornings (especially Jun–Aug), and binoculars for riverine birding and leopard scanning.

Insider Tips

Do at least one early walk followed by a slow brunch back at camp, then book your afternoon drive specifically for the final golden hour when the electric vehicles feel almost invisible at sightings. If you can, add a night drive return after dark for a completely different soundscape along the river.

Conservation Efforts

Shawa operates within a conservation-sensitive zone of South Luangwa and is positioned as an eco-camp; Green Safaris’ model emphasises reduced-impact operations and quieter wildlife viewing through electric vehicles, while supporting local employment and the broader Luangwa ecosystem through tourism value.
