A contemporary safari lodge set within the raw, uncommercialised wilderness of the 60,000-hectare Klaserie Private Nature Reserve in the Greater Kruger, Simbavati Amani pairs sweeping bushveld vistas with generous, thoughtful design, just eight suites, seven secluded Riverbed Suites each with elegant interiors and a private heated plunge pool over the dry riverbed, plus an interleading Family Suite, wrapped around two main lodge areas with heated pools, floodlit waterholes and an open-air boma over the riverbed, four of the Riverbed Suites can combine into an exclusive-use villa, days run on morning and evening game drives across genuine Big Five country, refined yet deeply connected to nature, and gentle on it.

Getting there

About 60–90 minutes by road (on gravel roads) from Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport (HDS) — the servicing airstrip — which has scheduled flights from Johannesburg and Cape Town, alternatively 2–3 hours from Kruger Mpumalanga International (KMIA) or Hazyview, or a 6.5–7 hour self-drive from Johannesburg (via Polokwane on the N1 is the recommended route).

Our Favorite Rooms

Eight suites, and the choice is straightforward: the seven Riverbed Suites are the pick, each with a king bed (convertible to twin), an en-suite with double vanity, separate toilet, bath and both indoor and outdoor showers, and, crucially, a private wraparound deck with its own heated plunge pool over the dry riverbed. The interleading Family Suite adds a second bedroom, two bathrooms and a private garden entrance with views over the floodlit waterhole, ideal for families. For families or groups of up to eight, four Riverbed Suites combine into the exclusive-use Riverbed Villa with a private lodge pool, living area, private dining and a dedicated safari vehicle.

Dining

Indoor and outdoor dining across two main lodge areas with sweeping bush and waterhole views, from mid-morning breakfast on the dining deck to lunch, afternoon tea and dinner on the deck or around the fire in the open-air boma over the riverbed (weather permitting), with a bar and a well-stocked lounge alongside.

Packing Tips

Neutral safari layers with a warm jacket and beanie for cold winter dawn drives in open vehicles (May–August, electric blankets are provided in the rooms), lighter clothing for hot summers, closed shoes, a sun hat, sunscreen and binoculars, insect repellent and antimalarials, and swimwear for the private plunge pool and the two heated lodge pools.

Insider Tips

The Klaserie is the original, non-commercialised safari, one of South Africa's largest private reserves with limited lodges and vehicles, so sightings feel genuinely wild and uncrowded, and being a private reserve your guides can traverse off-road and drive at night. Ask for a Riverbed Suite for the private plunge pool over the riverbed and the floodlit-waterhole action, and note the whole lodge is a rare genuinely family-friendly Big Five option (all ages welcome, though there's no kids' activity centre and game drives start at 6).

Conservation Efforts

Simbavati Amani sits within the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, established in 1972 as part of the greater Kruger, a 60,000-hectare tract with an open, fenceless border to the Kruger National Park in the north and the Timbavati to the south-east, allowing wildlife to move freely across the Greater Kruger. The reserve protects sustainable populations of endangered species including wild dog, saddle-billed storks and southern ground hornbills, and the lodge itself was built to tread lightly, running on solar energy with water-wise systems and low-impact design.
