Jao is Wilderness’s design-forward flagship in the private Jao Reserve. Five vast suites and two two-bedroom villas on raised boardwalks, each with a private plunge pool, overlooking classic Okavango floodplains. Expect an award-winning spa and gym, an extravagant wine cellar, a library plus a unique museum & gallery; activities pivot between water (mokoro/boating) and land (Hunda Island game drives) depending on the floods.

Our Favorite Rooms

Book one of the two Jao Villas for families or total privacy (private chef & vehicle). For couples, request a suite at the far end of the walkway for the quietest setting and uninterrupted floodplain views.

Dining

Multi-course, locally sourced menus with flexible private dining (even in-villa with your own chef); expect cellar pairings and bush brunches. Recent seasons have featured Chef Cindy (signature “frog bread” and banana-toffee pie at tea)

Tips

Packing Tips

Neutral layers (mornings/evenings can be cold Jun–Aug), a light rain shell, closed shoes you don’t mind getting wet for mokoro days, wide-brim hat & high-SPF sunscreen, and a soft-sided daypack

Insider Tips

Pre-book the Star Bed (a 20-min drive from camp) for a night under the Milky Way; plan a full-day Hunda Island game drive and picnic in drier months; and ask to try the glass-bottom mokoro when water levels allow.
