One of Rwanda's most luxurious and purposeful lodges, Singita Kwitonda, named after a legendary silverback ("kwitonda" means "the humble one"), sits on 178 acres sharing a 1.2 km border with Volcanoes National Park, the only lodge in such close proximity, with sweeping views of the Sabyinyo, Gahinga and Muhabura volcanoes, eight elegant, light-filled suites are built from local volcanic rock, handmade tiles and clay bricks, each with indoor and outdoor fireplaces, a mini bar and a covered veranda opening to a heated plunge pool, alongside the exclusive-use four-bedroom Kataza House, the on-site Akarabo Nursery and farm-to-table garden anchor an extensive reforestation mission to expand the gorillas' habitat, and days centre on gorilla and golden-monkey trekking with all the Singita polish, a wine cellar, boutique, gym and conservation lounge included.

Our Favorite Rooms

Eight suites built of volcanic stone and clay brick with vast windows framing the Virunga volcanoes, cosy living spaces, indoor and outdoor fireplaces, a mini bar, covered veranda and a private heated plunge pool. For families, the Two-Bedroom Family Suite (max 4) is the pick. The standout is the exclusive-use Kataza House, a four-bedroom villa (sleeps 8) built with local volcanic rock and handmade tiles, with indoor/outdoor fireplaces, an interactive kitchen, cinema room, massage room, gym, small wine cellar, heated plunge pools and its own chef and house team, ideal for families or groups wanting total privacy. Since all suites enjoy the volcano views, the pick is simply the one with the most open outlook.

Dining

Refined farm-to-table cuisine drawing on the lodge's own Akarabo garden and local produce, served in indoor and outdoor dining areas with volcano views, plus a wine cellar and tastings, a conservation lounge and central fire pits, with all meals and drinks (bar premium imports and champagne) included.

Packing Tips

Long-sleeved neutral clothing and sturdy waterproof hiking boots for muddy, steep forest trekking, a light rain jacket (rainforest showers come any time), a warm layer for cool highland mornings and evenings, insect repellent and antimalarials, and a face mask for near the gorillas, Kwitonda's Gear Room lends gaiters, waterproofs and trekking poles, and comfort kits and daypacks are provided, so you can travel light. Note drones are strictly prohibited in Rwanda.

Insider Tips

Kwitonda's 1.2 km park border means quick, easy access to the trek assembly point, a real advantage over lodges further out. Book gorilla permits well ahead (Rwanda's are USD 1,500/person, capped and separate from the rate), and note the minimum age for gorilla trekking is 15, though children of all ages are welcome at the lodge with childminding and tailored activities. Beyond trekking, add golden-monkey trekking, the Akarabo Nursery reforestation experience, community and cultural walks, and a Kigali city/Genocide Memorial tour en route. Transfer is a 2.5-hour scenic drive from Kigali (or a helicopter hop), and the exclusive-use Kataza House is perfect for a multigenerational family or friends' group.

Conservation Efforts

Kwitonda is central to Singita's 100-year conservation purpose in Rwanda, its 178 acres form a vital buffer between farmland and the park, and an extensive reforestation programme, supported by the on-site Akarabo Nursery, is restoring indigenous forest to expand the range of the roughly 320 endangered mountain gorillas in Volcanoes National Park. The lodge was built using local volcanic rock, handmade tiles and clay bricks from nearby communities, a farm-to-table garden supplies the kitchens, and Singita's community and staff-development work runs throughout.
