An intimate, barefoot-luxury tented camp, set on the white-sand banks of the Zambezi River within the Zambezi National Park, about 20 km upstream of Victoria Falls, so you get a genuine wild safari setting yet easy access to one of the natural wonders of the world, five river-facing suites (three doubles/twins and two two-bedroom family suites) blend thatched main areas with flowing canvas tents and Moroccan-inspired décor, each with a lounge, en-suite bathroom, private outdoor shower and views over the water where hippos snort and fish eagles call, days run on open-vehicle game drives, Zambezi boat and dhow cruises and guided walks in a park with more lions per square kilometre than anywhere in Zimbabwe, solar-powered and light-footed, with the new Mpala Jena Private Villa alongside for exclusive-use groups.

Our Favorite Rooms

Five generous canvas tents set on decking under the dappled shade of sausage, rain and water-berry trees, blending flowing canvas with thatch and Moroccan-inspired décor, each with a lounge and desk, an en-suite bathroom (bathtub, indoor shower, separate loo, double basins) and a verandah leading to a private outdoor shower with Zambezi views. The two two-bedroom family suites sit right on the riverbank with river frontage, the pick for families.

Dining

Simple but polished high-quality cuisine with a well-stocked wine cellar, all meals and local drinks included, served in the thatched restaurant, bar and lounge, or out on the sandy Zambezi beach around the fire pit at sunset, with the barefoot, shoes-off ethos running throughout.

Tips

Packing Tips

Neutral safari clothing with warm layers, a jacket and beanie for cool winter morning drives and boat cruises (June–August), lighter clothing for the hot October build-up, closed walking shoes, a sun hat, sunscreen and binoculars, insect repellent and antimalarials, swimwear for the pool, a light waterproof for boat outings, and USD cash for extras, dated 2016 or newer.

Insider Tips

Mpala Jena is the rare Victoria Falls base that's a genuine wildlife camp, you're inside the Zambezi National Park with big game around, yet the Falls are only a ~45-minute game drive or 30-minute boat transfer away, so you get both. Make time for a sunset cruise on the Zambezi (including the camp's unique dhow), and note the park has exceptional lion density.
