A true pioneers' camp and one of the earliest established in the wild Klaserie, Ivory Wilderness River Rock Lodge sits intimately on the banks of the Klaserie river in the unfenced Greater Kruger, where vast herds of elephant and copious birdlife come down to the water below, just six Old-Africa Kruger-style rondavels and a Family Homestead, each riverfront with en-suite shower and bath and Egyptian cotton linen, a game-viewing deck, lounge and pool strung along the river, this is a walking-trails specialist as much as a driving-safari lodge, days run on guided bush walks and open-vehicle drives in Big Five and Big Seven country, fully inclusive, personal and refreshingly unpretentious.

Our Favorite Rooms

Six Kruger-style rondavels and a Family Homestead, all set along the Klaserie river with expansive bush views beyond, each decorated with its own touch of Old Africa, blending rustic authenticity with modern comforts, en-suite with both shower and bath, Egyptian cotton linen, air-conditioning and fans.

Dining

Fully inclusive and wholesome, all meals and snacks (early-morning breakfast, full breakfast, lunch and a three-course dinner) plus a wide selection of local beverages (purified water, soft and alcoholic drinks, tea and coffee), served on the game-viewing deck over the Klaserie river or as wilderness fine dining, with bush breakfasts, bush dinners and sleep-outs available on request at extra cost.

Packing Tips

Neutral, muted safari clothing (essential for the walking trails) with sturdy closed walking shoes, a warm jacket and beanie for cold winter dawn drives and walks (May–August), lighter clothing for hot summers, a sun hat, sunscreen and binoculars, insect repellent and antimalarials, swimwear for the pool, and long trousers for bush walks.

Insider Tips

Ivory Wilderness is a walking-trails specialist (it's "Trails and Safaris"), so prioritise the guided bush walksThe lodge sits right on the Klaserie river, so elephants and game drink below your rondavel and the deck, and being a private reserve your guides can drive off-road and after dark.

Conservation Efforts

Ivory Wilderness grew from generations of nature lovers devoted to the Klaserie, and the lodge sits within the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger whose unfenced border with Kruger lets wildlife roam freely across one of the world's largest protected areas. Guest conservation levies fund the reserve's protection, and the optional flying safari doubles as an anti-poaching contribution.
