Fly into Durban (King Shaka International Airport) or Margate Airport, followed by a 2.5 to 3.5 hour road transfer depending on routing and road conditions. Or fly in directly to the lodge's airstrip on a private chartered flight.
Rooms 1–7, closest to the ocean, offer the most dramatic experience, with uninterrupted sea views and private decks, some with plunge pools. We personally think Room 5 and 6 are the best also in terms of privacy. Expect spacious, beach-chic interiors, en suite bathrooms, and a seamless indoor-outdoor flow.
Dining is relaxed, authentic and generous, often served on the deck overlooking the ocean. Expect fresh, seasonal dishes with a strong coastal influence, from seafood to farm-style meals, paired with South African wines and a laid-back atmosphere.
Light coastal clothing, swimwear, a windbreaker for breezy evenings, and good walking shoes for exploring the coastline and reserve.
Ask Chef Nozi for the Num-Num Berry Cheesecake- it is probably one of the best cheesecake we ever tasted. Picked from around the lodge, the fruit, which is high in vitamin C, calcium, and magnesium, has a sweet, cranberry-like flavour.
GweGwe operates on a community-owned model, where tourism directly supports local livelihoods, conservation, and the long-term protection of the Mkambati reserve. The lodge plays a key role in preserving this unique coastal ecosystem while creating sustainable economic benefit for the surrounding communities.
