Fly by light aircraft (Cessna Caravan) to Kanana's airstrip, about a 20–30 minute flight from Maun (MUB), or roughly 1 hour 30 minutes from Kasane, followed by a short 10–15 minute road transfer to camp.
Seven spacious raised safari tents strung along the waterline, each open-fronted (screen and optional shades) for uninterrupted floodplain views, with a leafy mural behind the bed, an en-suite bathroom with a large walk-in shower and luxurious fittings, plus an outdoor shower, standing and ceiling fans, hairdryers and even yoga mats, all on full solar power. Since every tent faces the water, the pick is one set furthest along the waterline for privacy and the most open lagoon view. Families take the two-bedroom family tent with two separate en-suite bathrooms (sleeps up to 5), and there's a remote sleep-out platform to pre-book for a night under the stars.
Warm, home-style cooking served buffet-style at one long communal table (lovely for solo travellers and small groups), a mix of traditional Botswana dishes, kudu is a local speciality, and Western fare, with four or five dinner choices including vegetarian, plus surprise bush picnics and sundowners in beautiful spots, all meals and selected local drinks included.
Neutral safari layers with a warm jacket, beanie and gloves for cold winter dawn drives and mokoro outings (June–August), lighter clothing for the hot October build-up, closed shoes for walking safaris, a sun hat, sunscreen and binoculars (superb birding here), insect repellent and antimalarials, swimwear for the pool, a headtorch, and a soft bag (~20 kg) for the light aircraft.
Kanana is one of the better Delta camps for water, so time your stay for the flood (roughly May–September, when the Xudum is high) to make the most of mokoro and boat safaris, and don't miss the mokoro glide through reed-and-lily channels, our guests rate it a highlight. The concession has the Delta's most active heronry and regular Pel's fishing owl sightings, so it's a birder's dream, and it's a genuinely child-friendly camp (family tent, min age 7).
Kanana runs on full solar power and sits lightly on its private 35,500-hectare concession within the UNESCO-listed Okavango Delta, and Ker & Downey Botswana is known for deep local empowerment, its guides and service staff are mostly local and genuinely invested in the camps' success. Kanana was voted "Best Community Focused Safari Property in Africa" in 2014, and its conservation model channels tourism value into surrounding communities.
