From Kigali to Bisate it is a ~2.5–3 hrs drive. Helicopter (Akagera Aviation): ~30 mins from Kigali to Musanze/Bisate helipad; followed by a ~5-min road transfer from Bisate helipad or ~30-min from Musanze helipad to the lodge.
All six are identical in layout. Our favourite one was Villa 6 which has the biggest views but also many stairs. Lower villas (1–2) suit guests wanting less uphill walking.
Refined Rwandan-inspired, seasonal menus in the main restaurant and wine cellar; private in-villa dining on request. Head Chef Angelus Karangwa; signatures have included Bisate Butter Chicken and Tilapia & Passion-Fruit Beurre Blanc.
Sturdy waterproof boots, layered thermals, rain jacket, gardening gloves for vines, gaiters (lodge provides), small daypack; bring spare socks for post-trek.
Bisate’s new Wellness Centre adds a restorative counterpoint to the gorilla trekking, perfect for easing tired legs after a steep day in the forest. Make full use of Kwanda, the new day-use lounge, on your arrival and departure days: it has hot showers, a curio shop and a proper restaurant serving homemade pizzas, so if you land early before your room is ready, or want a late checkout after a morning trek, you can shower, change, eat and relax in comfort rather than waiting around. It’s a genuinely useful buffer when trek timings and flight schedules don’t quite line up.
Bisate’s long-running indigenous reforestation has restored degraded farmland into buffer habitat; 80,000+ trees planted at Bisate (part of 100,000+ across Wilderness Rwanda), plus local water-access and education projects via partners like the Fossey Fund & CITW.
