Fly to a Welgevonden airstrip (via scheduled/charter services) or take a set-rate road transfer from OR Tambo International Airport (Johannesburg) to Mhondoro Eco Farm & Reception, then a scheduled onward transfer to the lodge (normal transfer window 12h00–12h30; additional transfers R1,500/vehicle). It's roughly a 3.5–4 hour drive from Johannesburg.
Six individually styled suites plus a villa. The two Luxury Pool Suites (1 bedroom, max 2 adults) and the Honeymoon Suite are the couples' picks, each private and elegant with a waterhole or bush outlook. The three two-bedroom family suites, Family Deluxe, Family Pool (with a private pool) and Executive, each take up to 4 (or 2 adults + 2 children), ideal for families. The standout is the three-bedroom exclusive-use Villa (magnificent master plus two en-suite bedrooms, 1–4 guests) with its own private pool, gym and yoga room, private vehicle, guide, chef and housekeeping. All rooms enjoy the lodge's signature waterhole setting.
Fully inclusive dining, all meals, teas and coffees, soft drinks, local beers and hand-selected house wines and spirits, from waterhole-view breakfasts and lunches to boma dinners under the stars, with a temperature-controlled wine cellar of premium and reserve wines at the Main Lodge (charged separately), and a new farm-to-table lunch option at the Eco Farm & Reception.
Neutral safari layers with a warm jacket, beanie and gloves for cold winter dawn drives in open vehicles (May–August, the Waterberg gets genuinely cold), lighter clothing for hot summers, closed shoes for bush walks, a sun hat, sunscreen and binoculars, swimwear for the pool, and a good camera for the underground hide, no malaria precautions needed here.
Mhondoro's malaria-free Waterberg setting makes it a superb Big Five choice for families and anyone wanting to skip antimalarials. Don't miss the underground photographic hide at the waterhole, it puts you eye-level with drinking elephants, and being in Welgevonden (a well-managed private reserve), game viewing is uncrowded.
Mhondoro operates within the Welgevonden Game Reserve, a ~37,000-hectare privately protected, malaria-free Big Five wilderness in the Waterberg, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, where guest conservation levies fund the reserve's wildlife management and protection. The lodge takes a low-impact, considered approach (its new Eco Farm supplies farm-to-table produce), and Welgevonden is known for its careful, research-led conservation and low vehicle densities.
