The first property beyond the bush for the family-owned Sabi Sabi Collection, The Claremont is a beautifully restored 1928 Cape Dutch Revival manor, originally "The Andros", designed by Magdalena Gertrude Sauer, South Africa's first registered female architect, set in the genteel, tree-lined suburb of Claremont on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, just fifteen individually styled rooms, some in the historic manor with its gables and sash windows, others opening onto landscaped gardens or beside the pool, keep the experience quietly personal, a Safari Room lounge nods to the group's bush heritage, while the Koffiehuis café, the wine-focused 1928 Craft Bar, a bistro and a spa complete an unhurried city retreat, minutes from Kirstenbosch and the Constantia wine route, and, true to Sabi Sabi since 1979, it's built as the perfect Cape bookend to a Big Five safari.

Getting there

About a 20–30 minute drive (roughly 15 km) from Cape Town International Airport (CPT), and a similar distance from the V&A Waterfront and city centre; the Southern Suburbs setting puts Kirstenbosch about 5 minutes away and the Constantia wine route on the doorstep.

Our Favorite Rooms

Fifteen individually styled rooms blending 1920s manor character with contemporary South African design by Dakota Design, ranging from Classic and Deluxe Rooms to the standout Sauer Villa, the exclusive pick, with its own private pool and separate entrance. Rooms sit either within the historic Manor House (the most heritage-rich, with gables and sash windows) or open onto the landscaped gardens or the pool. For the most character, request a manor room, for privacy and space, the Sauer Villa. All have en-suite bathrooms and refined amenities, and the intimate scale keeps service warm and personal.

Dining

The social heart is the Koffiehuis café, serving speciality coffee from sustainably sourced beans and a proper all-day high tea, alongside the Veld & Vine bistro for South African cuisine and the wine-focused 1928 Craft Bar, its shelves lined with rare Cape vintages, classic cocktails, small-batch gin and craft beer, plus a light-filled Sun Lounge and garden conservatory.

Packing Tips

City-smart and smart-casual clothing for Cape Town's restaurants and wine estates, layers for the Cape's changeable weather (warm summer days, cool evenings, cold wet winters June–August), comfortable walking shoes for Kirstenbosch and the neighbourhood, swimwear for the pool, and sun protection for strong summer sun, no safari or malaria kit needed here.

Insider Tips

It's a quieter, more suburban alternative to a city-bowl or Atlantic Seaboard base, minutes from Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden and the Constantia wine route, and a short drive from the city centre and beaches. Book the Sauer Villa for a private-pool honeymoon or a special occasion, and make time for high tea at the Koffiehuis and a South African wine flight at the 1928 Craft Bar.

Conservation Efforts

Not a conservation property as such, but a heritage-preservation one, the hotel is a faithful restoration of a century-old Cape Dutch Revival landmark by pioneering architect Magda Sauer, and it carries the wider Sabi Sabi Collection ethos of community development, local employment and staff training. Its sustainability touches include sustainably sourced coffee at the Koffiehuis.
