Fly to Mfuwe International Airport (MFU) on scheduled flights from Lusaka, where the team meets you and flies you in their own aircraft to Sungani's airstrip, a total flight time of around 20 minutes, alternatively a road transfer of about 3 hours (roughly 70 km) can be arranged.
Seven spacious custom tents (approx. 105m2 indoors) on polished concrete floors, understated and elegant with warm colours and natural textures, each with a slipper bath, indoor and outdoor showers, air-conditioning, a minibar, and a private deck with its own plunge pool over the lagoon, so you watch game drink from your own deck. Four are King tents and three are Doubles (Queen), with one Double configured to sleep two adults and two children, ideal for families, and there's a dedicated honeymoon tent. The standout is the Directors' Tent, the top choice with added WiFi, DSTV, a Nespresso machine and an outdoor sleeping option.
Clean, simple and locally sourced, an à la carte breakfast from the grill on the sun-drenched deck, a relaxed buffet lunch, an afternoon tea of freshly baked treats, and a seasonally changing dinner menu leaning into African flavours with local meat, vegetables and garden herbs, the bar (open from mid-morning) pours fine wines, beers, spirits and a cocktail/mocktail menu, with tea and coffee available all day.
Neutral safari clothing with warm layers, a jacket and beanie for crisp pre-dawn winter game drives (the valley cools sharply on open vehicles), lighter clothing for the hot, hot October build-up, closed walking shoes for the walking safaris this park is famous for, a sun hat, sunscreen and binoculars, insect repellent and antimalarials, swimwear for the plunge pool, and camera gear (there's an on-site studio and hireable pro equipment).
South Luangwa pioneered the walking safari, so make time for a guided walk here, and the lagoon in front of camp is a wildlife magnet, watch hippo and leopard from your own deck. Sungani leans hard into photography, with a dedicated studio (27" Apple desktop, latest Adobe software) and rentable top-end camera gear, a real draw for keen photographers. It's extremely remote in the quiet far south of the park, so you'll rarely share a sighting, and it pairs perfectly with sister camp Kulandila just upstream for a combined south-Luangwa stay.
Sungani and its sister camp Kulandila were hand-built from 2019 by the family and local community, transforming a neglected far-southern stretch of the park and putting many local people into work, often for the first time, with the majority of the lodge crafted on-site. Extremely remote, the camp sources food locally to support the community and partners with the Zambian Carnivore Programme and Conservation South Luangwa, channelling sustainable tourism into protecting the valley's leopards, wild dogs and lions.
