Fly to Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport (HDS) on daily scheduled flights from Johannesburg or Cape Town, then a road transfer of roughly 40–60 minutes to the Homestead; a private airstrip landing at Thornybush is also possible (landing fees apply), and it's roughly a 5-hour self-drive from Johannesburg.
A single four-bedroom river house taken exclusively, so the appeal is the whole home rather than choosing a room. Four generously large en-suite bedrooms are arranged around upstairs and downstairs lounges, a kitchen and a private bar, opening to a swimming pool, an outdoor entertainment area and a standout outside safari bath, all with elevated views over the Timbavati River. It's genuinely family-friendly (children welcome from age 2), and the private vehicle means you set your own game-drive rhythm.
Your choice of fully catered or self-catered. Catered stays bring a private chef and culinary team for meals prepared to your preference, from breakfasts and lunches over the river to bush breakfasts and boma dinners under the stars; self-catering guests use the Homestead's full kitchen and bar (drinks and provisioning by arrangement).
Neutral safari layers with a warm jacket and beanie for cold winter dawn drives in open vehicles (May–August), lighter clothing for hot summers, closed shoes for any walking, a sun hat, sunscreen and binoculars, insect repellent and antimalarials, swimwear for the pool, a good camera, and, if self-catering, plan your supplies (and note connectivity is limited).
The Homestead's trump card is flexibility: book it fully catered with your own chef and butler for a hands-off luxury stay, or self-cater for a relaxed private-villa feel, either way you get a dedicated guide, tracker and vehicle. It's the family/group choice at Siviti (children from age 2, versus the adults-oriented main suites), so it suits multi-generational trips. The Thornybush is superb for big cats, and drives go off-road and after dark. Bring what you need, as cell signal and Wi-Fi are limited here, and fly into Hoedspruit Eastgate for a ~40–60 minute transfer (or use the Thornybush airstrip).
The Homestead sits within the ~14,000-hectare Thornybush Private Nature Reserve, part of the Greater Kruger conservation area whose unfenced borders with Kruger let wildlife roam freely across the ecosystem. Guest conservation fees support the reserve's wildlife management, and Siviti offers conservation-focused experiences including visits to the K9 Anti-Poaching Unit, rhino-dehorning projects (subject to availability) and the Nourish Eco Village.
