Getting there

Take a private charter from Cape Town International (CPT), about 45 minutes to the De Hoop airstrip, where a vehicle meets you for a roughly 25-minute transfer to the lodge, helicopter transfers can also be arranged, alternatively self-drive about 3.5 hours from Cape Town along the Whale and Garden Routes, with gravel roads inside the reserve (a 2WD with higher clearance is comfortable, a 4×4 isn't required).

Our Favorite Rooms

Five suites, all 90 m²-plus, and the split is ocean versus seclusion, the four Ocean View Suites are the headline pick for their panoramic Indian Ocean and dune views, with the two Ocean View Family suites adding a generous bay-window daybed that doubles as a child's bed, ideal for families, in whale season these balconies put Southern Rights right in front of you. The Honeymoon Suite trades the sea view for the fynbos belt but is the couples' choice for the most privacy, a large terrace with sun loungers and its own outdoor bathtub.

Dining

All meals, snacks and soft drinks are included, with a kitchen leaning into South African cuisine, served in the first-floor dining room, out on the rooftop terrace, beside the courtyard pool or down at the sunken fire-pit lounge over the ocean, and beach picnics can be arranged.

Packing Tips

Layers for warm days and cool, often breezy mornings and evenings on the Cape coast, a warm windproof jacket for whale watching and dune walks, neutral tones for nature drives, closed walking shoes for fynbos and tidal walks, swimwear for the heated pool and rock pools, sun hat, sunscreen and good binoculars for whales and birds, no malaria precautions needed.

Insider Tips

Come between August and October for peak Southern Right whale watching straight off the dunes, stay at least two nights to fit in the tidal walks, dune boarding and mountain biking, and remember the reserve gates close at 6pm (7pm on Fridays) so time a self-drive arrival accordingly. Ask about the Goodwill Foundation's Coastal Conservation with a Purpose experience.

Conservation Efforts

Built with real sensitivity to its setting, the lodge runs fully off-grid on solar power with pellet burners for hot water and underfloor heating, plus grey-water reuse and LED lighting, sitting within De Hoop's marine protected area and a Southern Right whale nursery. Through the Morukuru Goodwill Foundation, guests can join Coastal Conservation with a Purpose, with links to the Two Oceans Aquarium Turtle Conservation Centre, alongside community investment and local employment initiatives.
