RefinedRoutes started the way most good things start. With friends and family asking for help.
After years in luxury hospitality and award-winning kitchens, I realised something simple. The trips people love most rarely come from a search result. They come from taste, experience and timing, and from knowing the small details that never show online.
I’m Sam. Swiss-born, South Africa based, and completely obsessed with how a place feels when you arrive. The room that catches the breeze. The guide who reads the bush like a second language. The lodge that looks beautiful in photos and runs beautifully in real life. I’ve always had a sharp eye for quality and an even sharper intolerance for “almost”.
I built RefinedRoutes because I was tired of generic itineraries. Africa isn’t static. Water levels shift. Wildlife moves. Management teams change. What was exceptional last year might not be today. The only way to design the right journey is to stay present. That’s why I stay close to the ground, keep checking, keep learning, and keep adjusting.
One of the moments that shaped this was in the Okavango Delta. Waking up in a mobile tented camp, the world still quiet, with elephants moving through camp as if they owned it. That feeling of being exactly where you’re meant to be. That’s the standard I chase when I plan for my clients.
