A timeless explorer’s lodge set among towering acacias on the banks of the mysterious, intermittent Savute Channel in the heart of Botswana’s Chobe National Park, one of Africa’s great wildlife theatres and playfully known as the Elephant Capital of the World, Belmond Savute Elephant Lodge is the inland sister to Belmond Eagle Island. Twelve thatched tented suites raised on wooden stilts look straight onto a busy waterhole where elephant, buffalo, giraffe and predators gather day and night, each with a private deck, indoor and outdoor showers and air-conditioning, an elevated pool, a spa tent, firepits and a new viewing hide complete the picture, and days run on twice-daily open-vehicle game drives in a Big Five park famed for its dramatic predator action, sustainably designed, richly textured and deeply in tune with the wild.

Our Favorite Rooms

Twelve thatched tented suites raised on wooden stilts and spaced along the channel, each with contemporary, earthy interiors crafted by local artisans, a private deck, indoor and outdoor showers, air-conditioning and a refrigerator. The whole point is the waterhole, (Room #4, right in front of the water), where elephants drink and bathe metres from your deck well into the night.

Dining

All-inclusive dining with breakfast, lunch, afternoon tea and dinner, served in the lodge restaurant overlooking the waterhole, on the deck above the elephants, or privately, with all drinks (teas and coffees, soft drinks, house wines, local beer and a select list of spirits) included.

Tips

Packing Tips

Neutral safari layers with a warm jacket, beanie and gloves for cold winter dawn drives in open vehicles (June–August), lighter clothing for the hot October build-up, closed shoes for any walking, a sun hat, sunscreen and binoculars, insect repellent and antimalarials, swimwear for the pool, a headtorch, plenty of camera gear (the waterhole delivers nonstop action), and a soft bag (~20 kg) for the light aircraft.

Insider Tips

Savute is all about elephants and predators, the channel and waterhole draw huge herds plus lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog, so spend time at the new viewing hide at dawn and dusk, and simply on your own deck (the on-site action is extraordinary).
